On Monday the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a decision that a smaller bank had the right to the Citizens name in the western Pennsylvania county.

Citizens Financial, a $137 billion-asset subsidiary of Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, announced in 2001 that it would buy Mellon Financial Corp.'s retail business, which included branches in Butler County.

The $470 million-asset Citizens National Bank of Evans City, Pa., has 13 branches in the county. It sought to block Citizens Financial from using the Citizens Bank name and logo there. In September the U.S. Court of Appeals of the Third Circuit ruled for the Pennsylvania bank.

The Charter One name reflects Citizens Financial's acquisition in August of the $45 billion-asset Charter One Financial Inc. of Cleveland. The Rhode Island company said it would keep the Charter One name in the Midwest.
