Paul E. Joiner, an executive vice president and the chief credit officer at the $313 million-asset Community Capital, will be the interim president while the board searches for Mr. Lee's successor, the company said Monday.

Mr. Lee was also the president and chief executive officer of Community Capital's main subsidiary, Albany Bank and Trust, which lost $408,000 in the fourth quarter of last year after earning $517,000 a year earlier.

For the full year, the bank's earnings fell 52%, to $680,000, and its return on assets fell 64 basis points, to 0.36%.

Mr. Joiner said that he learned of Mr. Lee's resignation only late last week and that he had given no indication that he was planning to leave so abruptly.

Mr. Lee could not be reached for comment.
