Assets held in exchange-traded funds globally have risen 9.5% since Jan. 1, according to data released Monday by Morgan Stanley.
European exchange-traded funds' assets grew 17.7% during the year's first three months, U.S. ETFs' 8.6%, and Japanese ETFs' 5.2%, according to research by the New York investment bank.
There are 500 exchange-traded fund portfolios worldwide, Morgan Stanley said; they are listed on stock exchanges like shares; track equity indexes, bonds, commodities, and other assets; and have $456.5 billion of assets under management.
In the quarter, 44 exchange-traded funds were launched, compared with 26 the year earlier. Morgan said 177 new ETFs are planned for this year.
