In Brief: Fed Clears Chase Purchase of J.P. Morgan

WASHINGTON — Chase Manhattan Corp. received Federal Reserve approval to proceed with its $29 billion purchase of J.P. Morgan & Co. Inc., the Fed announced late Monday.

The deal, which the companies hope to close by the end of the year, would create a banking company with combined customer assets of more than $660 billion.
