Dow Jones

WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Roger Ferguson said Friday that recent reports showing weakness in bank lending and profitability raise concerns - but are not by themselves a "red flag" for the entire banking sector.

"I would say this is simply a little bit of an early warning that one must watch carefully, but I wouldn't describe this as necessarily a red flag," Mr. Ferguson told reporters after making an appearance before a conference sponsored by the Treasury Department on electronic financial transactions.
