The Atlanta company announced the new contracts last week. Last year Harland Financial Solutions signed a record 30 core processing contracts worldwide.

This year three U.S. banks have agreed to use Harland's Phoenix System on an outsourced basis: Citizens State Bank of Woodville, Tex.; First State Bank of Socorro, N.M.; and Florida Coast Bank of Miami. Citizens and Florida Coast signed five-year contracts, and First State signed a 10-year one.

Bank of Butterfield in Barbados and University of Western Australia Credit Union agreed to use the international version of Phoenix System.

Harland said the five deals also include other banking products and services, including its Cavion Internet Banking software, item processing, remote capture, and checks.

Harland, the No. 2 check printer, is selling itself to M&F Worldwide Corp. of New York, which also owns Clarke American Corp., the No. 3 U.S. check printer.

Last year Harland said that it would spin off the Harland Financial Solutions, but after M&F announced its deal in December, Clarke indicated that it was interested in retaining the unit's capabilities, though it did not address the status of the spinoff plan.
