In Brief: Former CEO of Ohio's Peoples Dies

Robert E. Evans, who retired at the end of last month after 24 years as the chief executive officer of Peoples Bancorp Inc. in Marietta, Ohio, died late Wednesday, after a yearlong battle with stomach cancer. He was 65.

Mr. Evans joined Peoples Bank as a trust officer in 1970. During his tenure as the CEO of Peoples Bancorp, its assets grew from $145 million to $1.8 billion.

He was elected the chairman of the board in 2003. Peoples Bancorp appointed Joseph H. Wesel to succeed him in that post. Mark Bradley, who had been the chief operating officer, succeeded Mr. Evans as the CEO.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, three children, and four grandchildren.
