The Dominican transaction processing company FreeStar Technology Corp. has ordered 1,500 point of sale terminals from Hypercom Corp. for use in Europe.

FreeStar announced the deal Monday and said that its Helsinki subsidiary, Rahaxi Processing Oy, would offer the Hypercom Optimum machines to merchant clients. Rahaxi began selling Optimum terminals last year.
The terminals support the Europay, MasterCard, Visa security standard for smart cards. Many countries in Europe and Asia are using the standard, or are in the process of converting to it, which requires banks to issue new cards and merchant to install new card readers. The United States has no plans to follow suit.
