In Brief: Fund Raises $300M for Down Payments

SACRAMENTO — Nehemiah Corp. of California, a nonprofit that administers the nation’s largest privately funded down payment assistance program, said it had distributed $300 million in gifts to help borrowers get into homes.

Since 1997, when the organization started its down payment program, it has given gifts to 88,000 families in 49 states and the District of Columbia, it said Monday.

Nehemiah gets private industry sources, such as homebuilders, to donate to a fund that covers down payments for low- and middle-income borrowers. The nonprofit charges the contributors a fee to administer the fund, and it channels its profits towards community revitalization efforts, including partnerships with Habitat for Humanity.
