In Brief: Hartford Picks W.Va. Marketer for 529 Plan

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. said Thursday that it had chosen Manahan Group, a West Virginia marketing and advertising agency, to market the 529 college savings program sponsored by that state.

SMART529 is a qualified tuition program issued by the West Virginia Prepaid College Tuition and Savings Program Board of Trustees and administered by Hartford Life Insurance Co. Accounts can be opened by West Virginia residents with a $100 initial investment. Some 11,599 accounts have been opened by the state's residents, and another 65,000 have been started by out-of-state people.

Hartford, which is based in Simsbury, Conn., had 2005 revenues of $27.1 billion.
