In Brief: KBW Hires Stock and Bond Researchers

NEW YORK - Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc. said Tuesday that it had hired Diane Meridian as a strategist for its equity research department and Jay Weintraub as the head of fixed-income research.

Both report to Michael A. Corasaniti, the firm's director of research. Until November 2001, Ms. Meridian was an analyst with Morgan Stanley, where she followed large-cap banking companies. Earlier she was the head of the financial services group at Montgomery Securities, the predecessor of Banc of America Securities Inc.

At Keefe Bruyette she will issue research about how broader issues affect bank stock prices.

Mr. Weintraub was a senior fixed-income analyst at Merrill Lynch. He followed commercial banks, card companies, thrifts, and other financial institutions.

Keefe Bruyette has expanded its fixed-income department from 27 before the 9/11 attacks to 36 now. Sixty-seven of the firm's employees where killed in the attacks.
