Wachovia Corp. of Charlotte said Wednesday that it had chosen Washington, D.C., as the first market where it will offer extended weekday and weekend hours at some branches.
Last week the company outlined its plan keep branches open later, partly to attract new customers.
A spokeswoman said Wednesday that Wachovia would keep 36 of its 130 branches in the Washington area open until 7 p.m. beginning April 30. Fifty-four branches also will stay open until 4 on Saturdays.
Wachovia plans to expand the extended hours program to other markets this summer.
