Lafayette Federal Credit Union in Kensington, Md., is seeking permission to convert to a mutual savings bank, according to a filing with the Office of Thrift Supervision.

The $340 million-asset credit union, with six offices in Maryland and the District of Columbia, made its filing last week.

It is the first credit union to attempt a conversion since the $1.8 billion-asset DFCU Financial Federal Credit Union in Dearborn, Mich., withdrew its bid in April after a membership revolt.
