In Brief: Meijer, Discover in Cash Advance Deal (Corrected)

Meijer Inc. has agreed to offer in-store cash advances to users of credit cards from Discover Financial Services LLC.

Discover, of Riverwoods, Ill., announced the deal Monday. Meijer shoppers can receive cash advances of $20 to $100 over the price of their purchases at all of the big-box retailer's 176 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio.

Discover spokeswoman Leslie Beyer said the company is pursuing similar agreements for its Cash Over program with 10 other retailers.

Cardholders receive the advance at the register when they make a purchase, and pay whatever terms they "currently have on their card" for the advances, Ms. Beyer said. The program is similar to those that let shoppers ask for cash back when they use a debit card, she said.

Discover, a unit of Morgan Stanley, has been offering Cash Over advances since the early 1990s and says it is the only credit card company to offer such a service. It is available at 8,700 retailer locations, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Safeway Inc. stores.
