The company also said Tuesday that in mid-November it would merge its Enterprise Bank of Memphis into Cadence, which would have $1.4 billion of assets and branches in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Lewis F. Mallory Jr., NBC's chairman and chief executive, said that the new name would cause less confusion as the company expands into new markets.

NBC Capital plans to expand more in Tennessee, where a Memphis bank by the name of National Bank of Commerce had operated for decades before SunTrust Banks Inc. of Atlanta bought it last year.

The holding company will remain NBC Capital but will seek approval for a name change to Cadence Financial Corp. during its annual meeting in mid-2006.

Also Tuesday, NBC Capital announced that it would open its first branch in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday.
