"We said from the start that it would take six to nine months," Bill Nuti, NCR's chief executive, said last week at the Cebit technology fair in Hanover, Germany. "It's probably more nine months than six months."

The Dayton, Ohio, automated teller machine company announced the spinoff plan in January.

NCR said it plans to distribute shares in the Teradata division to shareholders and hopes the spinoff will help it focus on reviving growth in markets such as banking machines and checkout systems for retailers.

Teradata, which helps customers store and mine information, competes with Oracle Corp. and reported $1.6 billion of revenue for last year.

An application for a tax-free status for the spinoff is still pending, Mr. Nuti said.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has been appointed to manage the spinoff.

NCR also announced in January that it would outsource its ATM manufacturing in the Americas to Solectron Corp. of Milpitas, Calif., and that its factory in Dundee, Scotland, would start building high-end systems.

"We hope that within the next 30 days there will be clarity on the size of the reduction of size of work force" in Dundee, Mr. Nuti said.
