In Brief: New Chairman Takes Over at State Street

BOSTON - David A. Spina took over Thursday as chairman of State Street Corp.

He succeeded Marshall N. Carter, who retired.

The succession plan was announced last May, when Mr. Spina, 57, was named chief executive officer. He joined State Street in 1969 and has held a variety of jobs there, including chief operating officer, chief financial officer, treasurer, and president.

In a press statement, Mr. Spina said his strategy is to continue to build State Street's market share in investment management and securities processing, expand the company's presence overseas, and boost its Internet businesses.
