Verifone Inc. announced that its smart card terminals were chosen by the City of Nottingham for a local loyalty program.
The city issued 100,000 chip cards to residents in October and plans to have 250 terminals in retail outlets by Christmas.
The loyalty program, Shop and Save, was designed to stimulate business in Nottingham's downtown, which has been suffering in competition with out- of-town malls.
Shoppers will receive points for purchases made at participating stores. The points entitle them to discounts at stores, restaurants, hotels, and certain city programs.
