In Brief: N.Y. to Coach Activists on CRA Exams

The New York State Banking Department is encouraging banks to get community groups more involved in CRA examinations.

The state regulator will make that pitch today at a workshop in Albany. The agency also will teach bankers about changes in its CRA exam, which is now being done jointly with federal regulators.

This is the third of five such workshops in the state. The next is scheduled Monday in New York City and the final one Aug. 5 in Buffalo.

State Banking Superintendent Neil D. Levin said community group input could help banks prepare for exams.

"These workshops are aimed at those who would like to learn more about how community groups can provide input into the process," said Mr. Levin. "Front-loading community comments will give CRA examiners important information about local credit needs."
