Paul Mellon, a longtime board member of Mellon Bank Corp.'s predecessor banks and grandson of the Pittsburgh company's founder, died Monday at his home in Upperville, Va. He was 91.

Mr. Mellon was the grandson of Judge Thomas Mellon, who founded the bank in 1869, and was son of industrialist Andrew W. Mellon. He was a director of Mellon National Bank and Union Trust Co. from 1933-41. He was director of Mellon National Bank and Trust Co. from 1960-76.

Mr. Mellon was a major benefactor to the National Gallery of Arts in Washington and other cultural and charitable organizations.
