Linnet F. Deily, vice chairman of the San Francisco company, will be given the rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. She joined Schwab in 1996 as president of Schwab International and then headed its retail group.

Before joining Schwab she was president, chairman, and chief executive officer of First Interstate Bank of Texas.

Ms. Deily, 55, is also on the Federal Advisory Council, a 12-member body of senior executives who advise the Federal Reserve Board.

Schwab’s purchase of U.S. Trust last year made it the first nonbank to take advantage of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.
