In Brief: Speculation About Willumstad at AIG

American International Group Inc.'s appointment Wednesday of Robert B. Willumstad to its board of directors prompted speculation that the former Citigroup Inc. executive could be in line to be the New York insurance giant's next chairman.

Mr. Willumstad, 60, left Citi as president and chief operating officer in September, saying he was interested in becoming the chief executive of a public company. Efforts to reach him for comment Thursday were unsuccessful. A spokesman for AIG said it does not respond to speculation on who has "the inside track."

"All the newly named independent directors outside AIG are potential candidates," the spokesman said.

Frank Zarb, AIG's current chairman, got the job in March after Maurice R. Greenberg was ousted. Mr. Zarb is to step down in May but might stay longer.
