In Brief: Senate Confirms Four Treasury Officials

WASHINGTON — In its final act before adjourning for a month-long summer vacation, the Senate on Friday voted to confirm four key Treasury Department officials.

They are Kenneth Dam as deputy secretary, Peter Fisher as under secretary for domestic finance, Jimmy Gurule for under secretary for enforcement, and Michele Davis for assistant secretary for public affairs.

Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., had been blocking the Senate from voting on their nominations as a negotiating tactic in a dispute with Treasury over textile trade issues.

The confirmations put in place the Bush Administration’s key Treasury policymakers on banking and other financial issues.
