He joined Swift in 1987 and will succeed Leonard H. Schrank, who has been the CEO for 15 years, the longest tenure in the post since the organization, formally the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, was founded in 1973.

Mr. Campos, a 43-year-old Spaniard, worked in the international division of Banc Agricol before joining Swift.

In announcing the promotion Monday, Swift said the decision culminated a formal succession process that began last year and included both external and internal candidates.

Swift supplies standardized financial messaging services and interface software to 8,100 financial institutions in 207 countries and territories.
