The U.K. retailer Home Retail Group has installed VeriFone Holdings Inc. terminals at more than 600 of its Argos stores.
VeriFone, of San Jose, said last week that the project was one of the largest to date in the United Kingdom. Home Retail is using the vendor's PAYware Merchant system, which can read smart cards.
The terminal project complies with the United Kingdom's national shift to the Europay, MasterCard, Visa smart card security standard, which was completed last year. VeriFone said the terminals let the retailer to process more than 50 transactions a second.
Argos is one of the largest U.K. general merchandise retailers, with $6.8 billion of sales last year.
