CHICAGO - VeriStar Corp. and Redwood City, Calif.-based DigitalPersona Inc. have a partnership to provide merchants with biometric technology that allows customers to make point of sale payments with their fingerprints.
Consumers who enroll in VeriStar's free service can pay from their credit, checking, or other bank account by placing their finger on a DigitalPersona sensor integrated with a countertop credit card device - without having to use plastic cards, paper checks, or cash.
As part of the alliance Veri- Star is integrating authentication technology into DigitalPersona's fingerprint-scanning hardware.
"As consumers and merchants realize that added security can be utilized in a manner that is more convenient and less costly than carrying yet another piece of plastic in their purse or wallet, they will embrace this new service," said Fabio Righi, DigitalPersona's president and chief executive officer.
