In Brief: Visa Reports Peak Buying on Dec. 22

FOSTER CITY, Calif. - Visa U.S.A. said Thursday that its holiday transaction volume peaked on Friday, Dec. 22, with total Visa volume for both online and offline transactions surpassing $3.8 billion that day.

The total was 12.5% higher than last year's busiest day, Thursday, Dec. 23, when $3.42 billion of purchases were made on Visa cards.

Visa cardholders spent nearly $3 billion on the Internet between Nov. 24 and Dec. 25, nearly double last year's total of $1.5 billion. Visa's biggest day for e-commerce transactions was Dec. 12, when the VisaNet system processed more than $129 million in transactions, a more than twofold increase over last year's high of $63.5 million on Dec. 17.

Visa saw the online last-minute rush on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, when transactions totaled $128 million, falling just short of the busiest day.

Visa U.S.A. also reported that overall spending volume on Visa credit and check cards, including both offline and online transactions, between the period of Nov. 24 and Dec. 25, 2000, amounted to approximately $91 billion, an 11.8% increase over last year's total of $81 billion.
