Mr. Sanford, 57, is to have overall responsibility for Wilmington Trust's wealth management business throughout the western United States; he is to lead the development and delivery of advisory services for high-net-worth people, families, and foundations in the region, the bank said Tuesday.

A former western-region chief executive officer at Charles Schwab Corp.'s U.S. Trust, Mr. Sanford expanded the company's assets under management, employee count, and offices during his eight-year tenure. Before joining U.S. Trust, he was an executive vice president at Security Pacific Bank (now a unit of Bank of America Corp.), where he headed investment management, trust, and private banking in the western United States.

As part of its growth strategy for Southern California, Wilmington Trust last year relocated its western regional headquarters to larger offices in Los Angeles and bought Grant Tani Barash & Altman LLC, a Beverly Hills business management and family office firm that serves high-net-worth clients.
