National Planning Holdings Inc., a broker-dealer holding company in Santa Monica, Calif., announced that it named James Livingston as its chief executive to succeed Shawn Dreffein, who is retiring today.

Mr. Livingston, 52, will remain executive vice president of operations for Jackson National Life Distributors, a unit of Jackson National Life Insurance Co. of Lansing, Mich.
Jackson National and National Planning are units of Prudential PLC of London.
Mr. Livingston joined Jackson National in March 2003. Before that he was the chief financial officer and corporate actuary for Union Central Life Insurance Co. in Cincinnati.
National Planning announced Mr. Livingston's promotion on Tuesday.
