Mellon to purchase Meridian card loans.

READING, Pa. - Mellon Bank Corp.'s credit card subsidiary has agreed to purchase an $84 million Visa credit card portfolio from Meridian Bancorp Inc.

Meridian, based in Reading, said sale of the loans, issued by Delaware Trust Co., Wilmington, as part of the American Automobile Association credit card program, would bring a pretax pin of $6 million to $7 million.

The deal, subject to completion of a definitive agreement, would bring the outstanding card loans of Mellon Bank, Wilmington, above $1 billion, said Richard A. Gaugh, vice chairman and head of retail banking.

Mellon signed a definitive agreement May 2 to acquire $200 million in other Meridian Bank and Delaware Trust card loans, which Meridian said would result in a gain of $35.2 million before taxes.
