Mellon's board authorizes stock buyback.

PITTSBURGH -- Mellon Bank Corp. said its board authorized the repurchase of up to 1 million common shares.

The company said it will add the shares to its treasury shares and will use them to meet current and near-term common stock requirements for its stock-based benefit plans.

Mellon said it plans to make repurchases from time to time in the open market or through open market transactions.

As of Sept. 30, the company had 63.8 million common shares outstanding.
