Merchants in Vermont Hires Chief Operating Officer

Merchants Bank in South Burlington, Vt., has named its first chief operating officer.

Geoffrey Hesslink, an executive vice president, was promoted to the newly created post, the $1.7 billion-asset company said Tuesday. The company's board approved his appointment last week, a bank spokeswoman said.

Hesslink joined the bank in 1995, and has held several roles in commercial banking and credit operations.

Hesslink "is extremely well qualified for this new position as one of the top bankers in Vermont," Michael Tuttle, Merchants' president and chief executive, said in a press release. "We have a shared commitment to the continued success of our company and are excited about what the future holds for Merchants Bank."

Merchants, a unit of Merchants Bancshares (MBVT), has 33 branches in Vermont. It was one of the top-performing community banks based on return on equity over the last three years, according to an April survey by American Banker Magazine.
