Mexico to accept 20 to 25 foreign banks.

MEXICO CITY -- Finance Minister Pedro Aspe said 20 to 25 foreign banks will receive authorization to operate in Mexico starting next year, according to the official news agency Notimex.

Mr. Aspe also said that five to seven additional Mexican banks will be authorized in 1994, Notimex added.

Currently, only a handful of foreign banks, including Citicorp and Chase Manhattan, have representative offices in Mexico, but a number have said they plan to seek government approval to open branches here.
