NetLib Patch to Be Added to Terminals

Software Development Inc. hired NetLib, a Stamford, Conn., subsidiary of Communication Horizons LLC, to add an encryption patch to its merchant point of sale terminals to make them compliant with Payment Card Industry standards.

The Encryptionizer patch will allow SDI's terminals to encrypt credit card numbers when the merchant enters them into the system, NetLib said Monday.

MasterCard Inc. and Visa U.S.A. Inc. have been urging merchants to adopt the standards to protect cardholders' data.

Neil Weicher, the founder and chief technology officer of NetLib said in a press release that merchants have misjudged where most data breaches occur.

"For years we've pointed out that sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, were at much higher risk stored on disk than flying over the Internet. Until recently, businesses erroneously reversed the assessment of that risk," he said.
