United Community Banks in Blairsville, Ga., is searching for a new chief financial officer.

Rex Schuette, the current CFO, plans to retire in 2017 after his successor is named and a transition period is completed, the $10.3 billion-asset bank said in a news release Monday.

Schuette joined United Community Banks as CFO in 2001. Before that, he had served as chief accounting officer and controller at State Street in Boston since 1985, according to a Bloomberg.com biography.

Schuette's "deep financial expertise and sound business judgment have served our company extremely well during both challenging and prosperous times," Chairman and CEO Jimmy Tallent said in the release.
