Pacific Capital Of California Taps Thomas For Chief Exec

Donald M. Anderson, 72, has relinquished the chairmanship of Pacific Capital Bancorp, and the Santa Barbara, Calif., company has reshuffled its senior ranks to adjust.

The top executive job went to William S. Thomas Jr., 56. Already president and chief executive officer of Pacific's Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, he got those titles at the $3.5 billion-asset holding company too.

Mr. Thomas joined the bank in 1994 as senior vice president and as manager of its trust and investment services division.

In his new posts he succeeded David W. Spainhour, 68, who became the holding company's chairman. Mr. Spainhour remains chairman of the bank, and Mr. Anderson remains its vice chairman.


MIDWEST

First Merchants Bank in Muncie, Ind., has promoted Karen Evans to vice president of alternate delivery systems and sales.Ms. Evans was retail sales manager and trainer with the title of assistant vice president. She joined the bank in 1997 after working eight years managing the University Bookstore at Ball State University.

First Merchants Bank, a subsidiary of First Merchants Corp., has $846 million of assets.


SOUTHEAST

F.N.B. Corp. of Hermitage, Pa., has hired a top Florida executive of SunTrust Banks Inc. to lead its own Florida subsidiaries.Kevin Hale had been senior executive vice president of SunTrust Banks' South Florida offices, now called SunTrust Bank Holding Co., since December. He was in charge of private banking, insurance sales, and retail brokerage services in a five-county area.

Earlier he was president and chief operating officer of $1.6 billion-asset SunTrust Banks SW Florida for five years.

F.N.B. named him named executive vice president and chief operating officer of its Florida division, which is based in Naples. He will report to Gary L. Tice, the holding company's president and chief operating officer.

The Florida subsidiaries of the $3.7 billion-asset Pennsylvania company are First National Bank of Naples; Cape Coral National Bank; First National Bank of Fort Myers; West Coast Guaranty Bank in Sarasota; and First National Bank of Florida and Roger Bouchard Insurance Inc., both in Clearwater.


WEST

City National Bank in Los Angeles has promoted senior vice presidents Heng Chen, Dallas Huan, and Bob Patterson to executive vice president.Their responsibilities did not change.

Mr. Chen heads the bank's finance division, overseeing the asset liability, budget, and income tax areas. He is also a member of the bank's executive and asset and liability committees. He came to the bank in 1984 from the Los Angeles office of Price Waterhouse, where he was an audit manager.

Mr. Huan heads the bank's South Coast commercial banking region, which includes South Bay, Long Beach, Orange County, and San Diego. He joined City National Bank in 1998 when it bought Harbor Bank, of which he was president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Patterson heads the Ventura County and San Fernando Valley operations. He is also a member of the bank's executive and senior loan committees. He joined City National in 1989 after 17 years at Security Pacific National Bank, which a Bank of America Corp. precursor bought several years later.

City National Bank is a subsidiary of $8.4 billion-asset City National Corp.
