The unit was formed to develop ways to extend features of life insurance and annuity products to other financial products to help meet retirement needs.

Ms. Cody has worked for Phoenix since 1994. She will report to Philip K. Polkinghorn, a senior executive vice president and president of the company's life insurance and annuity arm.

Michael E. Haylon, senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, will assume Ms. Cody's role while the company seeks her successor, Phoenix said Wednesday.

Phoenix reported $2.6 billion of revenue and $29 billion of assets last year.
