PNC Financial Corp. made three high-level appointments effective Sept. 1, including the naming of Joe R. Irwin as executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Mr. Irwin has been president and chief executive officer of PNC's flagship bank, Pittsburgh National, since 1989. He joined the bank in 1963.

He will be succeeded at Pittsburgh National by Bruce E. Robbins, who was chairman and CEO of Central Trust Co., a PNC unit in Cincinnati.

Ralph S. Michael 3d, who was named president of Central Trust in May, will add the CEO title.
