Thirty-two Rhode Island government organizations will use payment processing services from Point and Pay LLC integrated into Opal Data Technologies Inc. software.
A unit of the Troy, Mich., independent sales organization North American Bancard, Point and Pay expects additional Rhode Island municipalities to join the program soon. It announced the deal Tuesday.
Coventry, Westerly, West Warwick and Woonsocket have agreed to use Point and Pay's services.
Opal Data, of Providence, R.I., provides financial software and services that enable government users to track information, such as property tax balances and fees for other government services.
The transaction volume likely will not be large, but the dollar amount of the transactions will be significant, Kevin Connell, Point and Pay's president, said.
"You can imagine property taxes in the Northeast," he said.
The municipalities do not pay an acceptance fee in the deal. Instead, Point and Pay will earn revenue from service fees cardholders pay.
Those fees will vary depending on the municipality and the size of the transaction, Connell said.
North American Bancard bought Point and Pay this year as it sought to expand its volume of recurring payments.
