Mr. Vrysen, 51, will continue to report to Keith F. Hartstein, the unit's president and chief executive officer.

Mr. Rizzo, 49, was a vice president and products services manager for Goldman. He will report to Mr. Vrysen.

Mr. Vrysen and Mr. Rizzo will oversee the fund platforms supporting John Hancock's variable annuity, group pension, and variable life insurance products. The insurance products and mutual fund platforms include 230 individual funds with $120 billion of assets under management.

Mr. Vrysen had been the CFO of John Hancock Funds since 2005. He joined Manulife in 1977 and held a number of roles, including vice president and CFO of U.S. operations. After the Toronto company bought John Hancock Financial Services in 2004, he became a vice president and general manager for fixed annuities.

Hancock, which announced the promotion and hiring Tuesday, had more than $56 billion of assets under management as of March 31.
