Cara Operations Ltd., a Toronto restaurant operator, has agreed to use wireless point of sale terminals from VeriFone Holdings Inc. of San Jose.
The deal, which VeriFone announced Thursday, is its largest to date for the terminals, which allow diners pay at the table.
Cara owns more than 800 large, full-service restaurants in Canada, including Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, Kelsey's, Montana's Cookhouse, and Milestone's Grill and Bar. The company will be the first in Canada to use VeriFone's On The Spot systems.
Terminals that can be brought to a customer's table are designed to prevent fraud.
Restaurants are frequently cited as potential fraud spots, because waiters take cards away from the cardholder.
"Full-service restaurants in North America were once early adopters of credit card payments but have been slow to respond to changing consumer needs for enhanced security and increased payment options," Douglas G. Bergeron, VeriFone's chairman and chief executive, said in a press release.
