Endeca, of Cambridge, Mass., provided apps for Apple Inc.'s iPhone and smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android, as well as a mobile website. The apps use the phones' location technology to find retailers that participate in the Upromise rewards program.

"Upromise helps students and families save money for college, and our new mobile apps make it easier for them to find ways to save when they're on the go," Colleen Miller, a vice president for Upromise, said in a press release Thursday. "Our new Upromise apps allow our members to find all the participating merchants where they live, work and travel."

Sallie Mae, of Reston, Va., is formally known as SLM Corp.

John Andrews, Endeca's vice president of marketing and product management for eBusiness, said in the release that "with a mobile platform, Upromise will improve stickiness, brand loyalty and conversion rates."
