Shawmut National Corp. said it would change the name of Connecticut National Bank to Shawmut Bank effective next Jan. 11.

Connecticut National dates to 1955, when First National Bank and Trust Co. of Bridgeport wanted a name with broader appeal.

The name survived a merger with Hartford National Corp. in 1982 and Hartford National's merger with Boston-based Shawmut Corp. in 1988. Shawmut said it was now opting for a uniform name regionwide.
