Short Takes: Schwab Veteran Joins Calif. Fund Manager

Tom Decker Seip, the architect of Charles Schwab & Co.'s popular OneSource mutual fund program, has returned to investment management.

Mr. Seip, who retired from San Francisco-based Schwab in 1998, is now a senior adviser to Webster Investment Management Co., which advises the Forward Funds. He joined Webster, also of San Francisco, the first week of June.

Mr. Seip assists the Forward Funds with strategic planning on a part- time basis, said Ronald Pelosi, the president of Forward Funds Inc. "My focus has always been on making mutual funds easier, more tax efficient, and lower cost," Mr. Seip said. "And that is very much Forward Funds' thrust," he said. The two men have known each other for more than 20 years.

Launched in 1998, the Forward Fund family contains six portfolios. Since leaving Schwab, Mr. Seip has served on the boards of a handful of private companies and foundations, but had not worked in mutual funds. He had been at Schwab for 15 years.
