Short Takes: Union Planters Names Head of Trust Group

Matthew W. Finn has been named president of the trust department at Union Planters Corp.

Mr. Finn, 38, previously supervised trust operations at Magna Group Inc., which Union Planters bought this month, along with 11 other banks.

The trust group has relocated to Magna's headquarters in St. Louis from Memphis, where $30.5 billion-asset Union Planters is based. The trust unit has combined assets of $18 billion.

Several back-office jobs have been eliminated amid the consolidation, though some people have been placed elsewhere within Union Planters, Mr. Finn said. He added that he did not expect more layoffs. "We're doing what we can to minimize losing any of the employees."

Mr. Finn succeeded John D. Temple.
