Smart Bits: DataCard, Biometric, Join on Health Cards

DataCard Corp. said it has formed an alliance with Biometric Tracking LLC to offer smart card products, particularly in the health care market.

The two companies have already combined their respective expertise in identification systems and biometric verification in SmartReg, a secure system for patient information and authentication.

They also collaborated on SmartPass, a Java-based system that secures access to medical and hospital records. The system relies on a physical characteristic of the cardholder instead of a password.

"The health care market needs innovative new ways to verify patient eligibility and access accurate information at the point of sale," said Michael Warthen, director of health industry marketing at DataCard, which also has an alliance with Gemplus, the French smart card maker.
