Oberthur Smart Cards said it has won the bidding to produce the next round of smart cards for one of the largest deployments of the technology in Europe.

The French manufacturer said it will provide 12 million cards over three years for GIE Sesam Vitale, a national health insurance program in France with 40 million cards outstanding.

These chip cards hold basic information-such as name of the insured, date of birth, and other family members-and must be presented each time a subscriber sees a health provider for an electronic prescription to be generated.

Oberthur said it will begin sending cards to personalization plants as early as July 1 and will deliver more on demand.
