The Treasury Department took one for the team last week when they gave up Dan Tangherlini, the assistant secretary for management and chief financial officer, who was tapped to pick up the pieces as acting head of the General Services Administration.
GSA Administrator Martha Johnson abruptly resigned on April 2 amid reports of lavish spending, to the tune of $832,000, at an agency conference off the Las Vegas Strip in 2010 that included $7,000 worth of sushi, $8,130 for employee "yearbooks," and a mind reader. By the end of the day, Tangherlini had been selected as Johnson's temporary replacement.
The former assistant secretary — we hear he goes by "Tango" — has been at the Treasury since 2009, after the Obama administration lured him from his job as a top aide to former D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty. Tangherlini is also the former head of the Washington Metro system, and worked for the Department of Transportation and Office of Management and Budget during the Clinton administration.
No word on when the White House may nominate his replacement. Given their track record on financial nominees, we're not holding our breath.
