Tech Bytes: 2 Major Brokers Using Voice-Activated Hot Line

Inc. said they have developed speech-activated hot lines at two leading brokerages.

The phone services complement Internet trading by allowing customers to place orders, confirm trades, and check stock quotes around the clock using spoken commands.

The brokerages were not disclosed. SpeechWorks said one national brokerage with the system has processed 1.2 million calls using speech recognition since 1998. Fiserv and SpeechWorks say they are now deploying a similar trading service for another sizable North American brokerage.

SpeechWorks deployed the first speech-activated trading service in 1997 to serve E-Trade Group customers.
