Tech Bytes: Data Security Execs To Keynote RSA Parley

Marc Andreesen, the executive vice president of Netscape Communications Corp. who developed the groundbreaking Internet browser, and George Hoyem, vice president and general manager of Verifone Inc.'s Internet commerce division, will be keynote speakers at the RSA Data Security Conference Jan. 13-16 in San Francisco.

The conference has become a regular gathering-place for leaders in digital commerce and the security afforded by data encryption, which is RSA's specialty.

RSA, a subsidiary of Security Dynamics Technologies Inc. of Bedford, Mass., also uses the occasion to test the vulnerability of DES, the federal Data Encryption Standard, by offering a reward for decrypting a coded message on the RSA Web site. The amount of the prize, up to $10,000, will be determined by how fast the secret key is recovered.

Among other conference events are a panel of eminent cryptographers such as RSA co-founder Ronald Rivest and Netscape chief scientist Taher Elgamal; a public policy discussion with legal experts in the field; and an exploration of the question, "Has Full-Service Security Arrived?" led by Prakash Ambegaonkar, chairman of Frontier Technologies Inc.
